Lecture in the Certificate in Sustainability and Social Innovation, WS 2019

Thursday 7 November 2019, 17.30 – 19.00,  Salle Paul Feidert, Bâtiment Central, Campus Kirchberg

How can policy makers take evidence-based ambitious actions against climate change?

Dr Andrew Ferrone, Head of Metereological Services, Administration of agricultural technical services (ASTA)

In its special report on global warming of 1.5°C the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that “Human  activities  are  estimated  to  have  caused  approximately  1.0°C  of  global  warming  above  pre-industrial level”. Considering the significant uncertainties that are inherent to every scientific analysis of such a complex system as the global climate, this lecture highlights the way the IPCC works to come to such conclusions. Moreover, it highlights to policy makers those areas where scientific evidence is clear. It also presents the latest scientific findings of both the IPCC and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) related to climate change.

Dr Andrew Ferrone holds a PhD in Climatology from the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium). His research ranged from regional climate modelling to the analysis of policy-options. He conducted climate research at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany) and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (Luxembourg).  Since December 2016 he is the Head of meteorological service at the Administration of agricultural technical services of the Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development. He is the representative of Luxembourg at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). In his role as member of the Luxembourg delegation he also acts as negotiator for the European Union on topics related to Science within United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
