SCHOOL FUTURES at the LGK

The LGC in Esch-sur-Alzette would like to use the project School Futures to bundle its diverse considerations in the field of school development and make them sustainable. For several years, there have been attempts at our school to rethink the “classical” teaching / learning arrangements adopted from the 20th century and adapt them to the requirements of the present.
What was missing so far to guarantee the sustainability of this school development was the conflation of the considerations in a coherent vision, which attaches reforms to social, economic, political as well as ecological developments.

Aims

We would like to use the School Futures project:
• to accompany the progressive generalization of iPad use in the classroom and critically question their educational added value;
• To gradually show the students the complexity of society and empower them not only to survive in such a fast paced world, but to become the engines of sustainable development.

How do we want to proceed?

From the 2017-18 school year, 5 of our 7th classes will work as iPad classes. There is a growing emphasis on the iPad as a medium to test new, future-oriented and ideally sustainable teaching / learning arrangements. Later, the use of the iPad progressive to other classes will be expanded. In particular, we expect better possibilities of internal differentiation and autonomous learning, which could be trend-setting in the context of lower-class reform. The scenarios elaborated by the CSDD can remind us to include as many factors as possible in our deliberations. Especially in our Sciences naturelles classes, these scenarios should help to recognize the complexity of the future worlds, even at the Gymnasium.

What is sustainability for us?

Sustainability is essential for us, especially in school development: it should be the highest principle of action when it comes to developing visions for our school. School development is sustainable when it employs the available material and human resources to progressively transform students into adults who, through their knowledge, skills and values, bring the city of Luxembourg. This social development should not always focus on mere hic et nunc, but rather reinforce the influence of today’s decisions on the generations of tomorrow.

What are we already doing?

 The LTE on target (2013-2017) project was certainly an important first step towards sustainable school development. It was all about bundling diverse initiatives in school development and making them more visible. Autonomy and motivation of the pupil were cornerstones of the project, and it will be one of the essential tasks of the Cellule de développement scolaire (CDS), to incorporate the findings of this school project further into the school life and to maintain the verve of the manifold ideas. Sustainability goes hand in hand with cooperation and communication: in this sense it is extremely important to see learning as the result of a cooperative and communicative approach. In this sense, pedagogical days have been introduced as platforms of cooperation and collegial understanding. They allow the teacher community to reflect critically on the steps taken and decide on further procedures. At the student level, the LTE has not least for offering the Sciences naturelles
Classes decided because interdisciplinary project work is perceived as a must there.
